Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: Big Screen + Big Battery = Immersive Experience

Samsung has been releasing 2 devices of their flagship S Series for the last few years, but then everything changed in 2020 and so did Samsung’s vision of the Galaxy S Series. Introducing the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

As the name suggests, everything about the Galaxy S20 Ultra is indeed ultra. Massive screen, massive amount of zoom in a phone, and massive power-bank to feed it power too. This is by far the most advanced and perhaps the most expensive S Series phone to date, and Samsung did not hold back when it came to spec.

Going against the iPhone 11 Pro, Huawei Mate 30 and Google Pixel 4, Samsung, being the largest phone maker in the world, had to convince everyone, that they can persuade consumers to either change to Samsung or upgrade, and they seem to have achieved that with this device.

The view:

This is a great jump from Galaxy S10+, as mentioned, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is packed with spec, so let’s dive in:

First thing first, the design of the Galaxy S20 Ultra is not a wow factor, in fact it really is nothing special, but the fact that Samsung have designed hardware such as Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Flip means they don’t have to deploy it for their Galaxy S lineup.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with a massive 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a 120Hz refresh rate, 12GB of RAM, 4 massively improved cameras with a 100X zoom (albeit digital/space zoom) plus 4X Optical zoom, with a whopping 108 megapixel, and 5000mAh battery to name a few, rest assured, the list of spec is pretty long.

Samsung stated that they built the Galaxy S range around their imaging technology. Part of the reason they did that was to convince consumers to upgrade. A recent poll suggested that the average consumer now stretched to a record 26 months to upgrade, which means people are holding on to their devices for more than 2 years before deciding on an upgrade, and Samsung are trying to convince users of S8 and S9 in particular to upgrade to their new Galaxy S range, so they gave them a reason, the zoom-crazy Galaxy S20 Ultra. Apart from the impressive zoom, the camera offers a number of attractive features, like the option to take hyper-lapse videos at night.

With the screen on Galaxy Note 10+, which was a pristine example of what to look for in a screen, Samsung upgraded that too. It’s almost impossible to find anything negative about this screen, it truly is exceptional in every aspect, brightness, view angles, colors, and all other display experience that matters, it ticks all the right boxes and more.

The 120Hz refresh rate is another standout feature of the S20 Ultra. This being the number of times the screen pixels are refreshing, which is basically double the standard speed of 60Hz per second. Gamers in particular will find this feature extremely useful and have a much more enjoyable experience playing games on this massively impressive screen. That experience does come with a price, having the 120Hz on all the time will drain the battery and will affect the battery performance significantly, but to have that as an option in itself is a massive plus.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is one of the first phones to ship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. with 12GB of RAM, which can upgraded up to 16GB. The basic memory on this device is 128GB which again can be upgraded via Micro SDXC card, and that kind of spec adds to the whole experience of using this impressive device.

The 5000mAh battery sounds great on the paper, given that the Galaxy S20 Ultra uses the super-efficient Snapdragon 865, but, it heavily relies on the refresh rate mentioned earlier. If it is left on 6Hz, the battery lasts around 24hrs, however, with the refresh rate changed to 120Hz, and the battery life shrinks to almost half that time.

The Verdict:

Granted that this device is the most expensive in the S lineup, but for those who want to do much more than ‘ordinary’ and are happy to pay to have the ‘extraordinary’ handset, price won’t matter to them. It really is about what you can do with this device that sets it apart. The immersive screen, the excellent cameras, the most efficient processor, and the battery, combined with its special features makes the Galaxy S20 Ultra an absolute must-have.
